First: What type of visa do you need?
As a Kuwaiti citizen or resident, Kuwait is a non-European country and you will definitely need a long-term national visa (National Visa – Type D) if your studies exceed 90 days. There are three main types:
Visa Type | Requirement | Duration
Studentenvisum – Student visa. You have received full university admission. 3 months, then renewal as a residence permit.
Studienbewerbervisum – Seeking a place visa. You have not yet received admission. 3–6 months.
Schengen Visa – For short language courses. Programs less than 90 days up to 90 days.
💡 Important Note
If your course at LGK is intended to prepare you for university admission in Germany, you will initially pursue a Studienbewerbervisum and then upgrade to a Studentenvisum after receiving admission.

Third: Step-by-Step Application
1
Language Proficiency Qualification — Start Here
Most German universities require a minimum of B1 for some programs and B2 or C1 for most. Start an A1 course at LGK and aim to reach B2 level within 18–24 months.
2
Applying to Universities via uni-assist
Most German universities accept applications from international students through the national platform uni-assist.de. Be sure to check the application fee (~€75 for the top university).
3
Open a frozen account immediately upon receiving your acceptance letter
After receiving your initial acceptance letter, immediately open a Sperrkonto (blocked account) with €11,904 via Fintiba or Expatrio. The process takes 3–5 business days.
4
Apply via VIDEX and then schedule your embassy appointment
For a long-term national (study) visa, apply directly at the German Embassy in Kuwait, not through VFS Global. The visa section processes up to 50,000 applications annually.
5
Personal interview
You may be called for an interview. Common questions include: "Why Germany?", "What is your field of study?", "Have you lived in Germany before?", and "Will you return after graduation?" Prepare clear and honest answers.
6
Obtain your student residence permit in Germany
Upon arrival, your visa will be converted to a student residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) at the Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) in your city before your visa expires.
Fourth: Visa Processing Timeline — Expected Timeline
⏰ Suggested Timeframe
18-24 months in advance: Begin studying German (A1 → B2)
12 months in advance: Submit university applications via uni-assist
6 months in advance: Unblock your frozen account upon receiving your acceptance letter
8-12 weeks in advance: Submit your visa application at the embassy. Visa processing typically takes 4-8 weeks according to the new online portal (CSP).
Fifth: Kuwaiti Citizens' Specials
Kuwaitis apply directly to the German Embassy in Kuwait and do not need to go through VFS for long-term national visas. However, the German Embassy reserves the right to request additional documents or summon applicants for an interview at any time.
🎯 LGK Tip
A B2 level in German not only opens doors to universities but also strengthens your visa application with the visa officer. A certificate from a Goethe-Institut-certified teacher further enhances your application.
