A2 | Elementary (Waystage)
The transition to basic autonomy. Learners can handle routine tasks and exchange information on familiar and common matters.

• Competencies: Understanding sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g., personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
• Interaction: Communicating in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information.
• Requirement: Ability to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need.

The milestone of independence. This level is typically the minimum requirement for living and working in Germany (Citizenship/Integration).

• Competencies: Understanding the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, or leisure.
• Interaction: Managing most situations likely to arise while traveling in German-speaking areas. Producing simple connected text on topics of personal interest.
• Requirement: Ability to describe experiences, events, dreams, and ambitions, and briefly provide reasons for opinions and plans.

Core A1 Competencies ("Can-Do" Descriptors)

• Listening: You can recognize familiar words and very basic phrases about yourself, your family, and your immediate surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.

• Reading: You can understand familiar names, words, and very simple sentences on notices, posters, or catalogs.

• Spoken Interaction: You can interact in a simple way if the other person speaks slowly, repeats or rephrases things, and helps you formulate what you want to say.

• Spoken Production: You can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where you live and people you know.

• Writing: You can write a short, simple postcard (such as holiday greetings) and fill out forms with personal details like your name, address, and nationality.
