Residence registration in Germany

In principle, anyone who comes to Germany and wants to stay longer than three months must register their residential address"Anmeldung" with German authorities two weeks later. Even if you are not a refugee, you must contact the local authorities such as "Einwohnermeldeamt" or "Bürgeramt", according to the Federal Registration Act (BMG). Even if the person has moved within Germany, the new address must always be reported to the authorities.

Anyone moving to Germany or moving within Germany from one city to another must register his name and residential address at the population registry office ("Einwohnermeldeamt", "Bürgeramt" or "Bürgerbüro") within two weeks. If he does not do this or registers too late, he may have to pay a fine. If he is an asylum seeker in Germany, all his data and information must be registered at the PIK ".

What are the documents required for housing registration?

Registration is carried out in person at the residents' registry office or the citizens' office. The address of the registry or citizens' office can be found at:melderegister-auskunft.de.

To register, you must bring proof of identity (ID card, residence permit, passport, etc.) and - if available - passport replacement papers. The registration form must also be filled out. The form can be obtained directly from the population registry office.

In some cities/municipalities, a person also needs a so-called "Einzugsbestirmung from the landlord” for registration. This paper confirms that the landlord is a tenant of his apartment. Sometimes a birth certificate or marriage certificate is also required for registration. If the person has these documents, it is best to take them with them to a registration appointment as a precaution.

What should be done in the event of a change of residence?

If we transfer our place of residence within Germany, we must register the new place of residence with the relevant population registration office (“Meldeamt” or (Bürgeramt). This is within two weeks of the transfer date. After that, the person receives a new confirmation of registration (the Anlamdong paper). Your new address will also be entered in your personal documents (eg residence permit, ID card...)

may be a person has to live between several apartments and if this is the case he has to tell the local registry office where he considers his main home.” Hauptwohnsitz” and about the places he considers “Nebenwohnsitz” secondary homes. If you want to leave Germany, you must cancel your registration (“Abmelden”) at your last address, at the relevant population registration office.

What are the other functions of the registry office?

There are more than 5,000 population registration offices in Germany, which are charged with many services. They carry out registration operations, adjusting the status and addresses of registrants, as well as issuing personal identification cards and children's cards, etc... In addition, population registration offices should provide information from their database if a person conducts an investigation of a record entry or “requests” Resident registration loginEMA-Anfrage.” This request may be useful if the person in question is looking for friends or family members, or if they want to find a customer who has moved or people who are trying to avoid paying a debt.

Private providers also offer this service, but often ask for money in return. Residents' registration offices also charge fees that vary from one municipality to another. Even if the requested person is not found as a result of their service, a fee will be required. The time required to obtain the information varies from one office to another. Sometimes it may take a few days, but sometimes it may also take several weeks.
